I would like to briefly thank those who made it possible for Josh, Nathan and I to attend “World Youth Day”.
For those who do not know about WYD, let me give you a little information. WYD was started by the late Blessed Pope John Paul ll in 1986. WYD does actually happen every year, however once every two or three years young people from across the Earth come together for a weeklong event, we come and celebrate our Faith with the Holy Father, the successor of St Peter in Holy Mass.
The three of us went with the diocese for two weeks, although we didn’t go straight to Madrid. Firstly we travelled by coach to Valladolid; home of the Royal English college of St Alban. We had a tour of the seminary led by Bishop Terry and attended Mass at the college most days during our stay here.
While staying at Valladolid we also travelled to Avilla famous for its association with St Theresa. We visited the monastery where she was for some time based. We also visited the monastery at Duenas where the relatively new Spanish Saint Raphael had lived. Both these saints were patrons of this WYD.
In the second week we travelled from Valladolid to Madrid. Most mornings we had Catechesis followed by Holy Mass. Some of the talks during the catechesis sessions were really inspiring and helped us to understand the teachings of the Church. This is really important for young people, as sometimes it is difficult to defend our beliefs if we do not understand it ourselves.
At the main the events the atmosphere was amazing, at the vigil alone was over a million people. Everyone was really friendly, we had loads of photos taken with other people from around the world and we had small badges with our Diocesan name on which we swapped with various trinkets from fellow pilgrims – I came back with a little koala from Australia and a bag from Italy, among other things.
When the Pope arrived the atmosphere was electrifying; everyone singing and cheering – it made you proud to be a Catholic.
To anyone thinking of going to the next WYD in Brazil (2013) – Go for it. It will be well worth going and you will meet lots of other Catholics the same age as you and make lots of great friends who share the same Faith you do. It shows you are not alone.
Do not be afraid, you are not on your own, your one in a crowd of many who share the same beliefs, be proud of your Faith.

Summer Round Up.

Once again we find ourselves on the brink of the summer holidays, the last few weeks have been even busier than usual, the other week a group of us attended the Postgate Rally, this was a great day, we started with the walk from Ugthorpe to Egton Bridge across land which would of been familiar to Blessed Nicholas Postgate. The Mass at St Hedda's Church Celebrated By Bishop Terence Patrick Drainey was packed out.During the Mass, the Bishop Blessed the new Blessed Nicholas Postgate stained glass window. I was hoping to link to some photos but they do not seem to be any on the Diocesan web site yet. I have posted our pictures on the blog but they are mainly from the walk and our visit to Whitby for fish and chips after the Mass.

On Friday we had our end of term BBQ. It was a good turn out, and the weather stayed nice for us.

Once again, so busy, didn't get chance to update - sorry!

Will do an overall update in the next few days but in the meantime here is a report from three of our members on "Invocation 2011"

Invocation is a national vocations festival, for young adults held at St Mary’s college, Oscott in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. This took place between the 17th – 19th June. This is a programme aimed to help young people between the age of 16-35 to discern their vocation and deepen their relationship with Christ. This was a fantastic opportunity to understand and consider our vocation; God’s will in our lives, and maybe even consider the Priesthood or Religious life.

This weekend away provided us the chance to take part in the Mass, Adoration, Confession and workshops designed to help us learn more about our Faith. The Mass on the Sunday was Celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio and an Apostolic Blessing from The Holy Father “Pope Benedict XVi” on the event was read out.
There were lots of different people from around the country, and we had the pleasure to meet and interact with them and make new friends and meet up with some friends from London who we had previously met at the “Faith” conference. It is hard to believe there are so many Religious orders, and nice to see so many young religious sisters.
The accommodation was simple, I think it is fair to say a bit rough. There was a field to pitch our tents or as some of us did sleep in the large marquee with lots of other people – all we needed was sleeping bag, mat and i-pod. (and a toothbrush). For some people sleeping under the stars wasn’t what they had in mind so they took off for local B&B’s and came back for the day. The main marquee where meals were held and talks held was nicely laid out, with carpets, chairs tables etc, it looked like it was laid out for a wedding. (Jerson Thomas said of the event) – “I wasn’t really sure about going because of exams, and the weather forecast was not good, it is fair to say that it was worth going as for many, priesthood opened up as a possible vocation.”
There were several workshops that you could choose from over the weekend. These included: a workshop about prayer life by Sr Gabriel Davison. One on Catechesis (looking at the new Y.Cat) with Dr Caroline Farey, Interior life and society by Dr Andrew O’Connell. The Carmelites, Dominicans, and Franciscans all held workshops on their own individual spirituality. To name but a few!
One of the highlights for all of us was the Blessed Sacrament procession around the college grounds by candlelight.

We all really got a lot out of the weekend and would definitely go again (“but maybe take my own tent next time” – Jerson)

4th Birthday Party

Tonight we celebrated our fourth birthday.
As it was a lovely evening we spent some time socialising out in the garden, some of the more energetic joined in a game of cricket, while some of the younger members showed of their hula hooping skills.
We went in the hall for party food and as a special treat we sent out for pizza.
Then back outside to bash the pinata.

A little later while we munched on the huge birthday cake we watched a film of photo clips from all our escapades from the last four years.
Then finally we finished with prayers, with a special prayer of thanks for God bringing us all together. We concluded prayers with a Blessing from Fr John.

St (Padre) Pio Day - Bradford

On Saturday a group of us travelled to Bradford to visit the Franciscan Friars for one of their Padre Pio days.

It was a great day with a cheeky little stop at Xscape on the way there.

We arrived at the friary just in time for a quick drink and a biscuit, then moved over to the Church for a talk given by Fr Augustine on the Sacrament of Confession. He spoke of the encounter with Christ we have when we approach the Sacraments. It was good to be reminded that "Confession makes you happy." He also reminded us that we need to be aware of sin and the importance of the Ten Commandments.

After the talk we stayed in Church ready for Holy Mass after which we went back over to the friary for a cup of tea and chance to meet lots of new people. After refreshments it was time to go back into church. Time of prayer in front of Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament during which time everyone was inspired to experience the joy of confession. The Holy hour finished with Benediction then back to the friary for chili.

Welcome Back

We had our first meeting of the new year last night, and we had a pretty good turn out.

We had a few birthdays to catch up with - so this = CAKE!

A few of us got to work decorating our new question box. Every week this will be available for posting any questions we might have regarding our faith but just don't like to ask. Then once a month we'll tackle these questions.

Before Christmas one of our projects was to send Christmas cards and a letter to some of our house bound parishioners. Sadly one of these ladies has recently died so we remembered to pray for her along with all the recently departed in our night prayers.

Faith Winter Conference - Stonyhurst- 2010

Youth club resume tomorrow (14th Jan), but since we finished for Christmas it seems we haven't stopped.
Between Christmas and New Year a group of us attended the Faith winter conference. Which as always was really good. the theme for the talks this conference was "Lord teach us to pray" (Lk 11:1). Hopefully very soon one of our young people will write a report on their experience for the blog - until then hopefully the photographs will suffice.

A Report on The Faith Youth Day from Mekha Moncey Thomas
I thought the Faith Youth Day in Scarborough was really good; the talks were interesting and during the day we had breaks like going for a nice walk or playing sports. We spent time with friends and met new people. About 30 of us came from Hull altogether there was about 50 people at Scarborough, which shows I wasn't the only one looking forward to be there. Throughout the day we had great fun and I can't wait for the next Youth Day.

One of the problems we sometimes have when going to confession is: "what do I say?"
We are all very good at seeing the faults in other people and even blaming others for our own mistakes, but when it comes to looking our own sins, we make all sorts of excuses. That is why to make a good confession we need to take a closer look at ourselves and see us not compared to the people around us but the person that God asks us to be. Tonight we did just that.

First we listened to the account in Exodus of God giving the Ten Commandments and linked this to Jesus summing up the commandments in Mt 22:34-40. Then we used the commandments to see where we were going wrong. As this was all going we had the opportunity to go to Our Blessed Lord through the sacrament of confession. (Well done everyone for going and thanks to Fr John)

We finished the night back in the hall with a game of dodge ball.

Lent - Prayer

This Friday we took the opertunity to look at contemplative prayer and spent a bit of time looking at the importance of trying to listen to God and what better time to start than during Lent. After running through a few different methods including lectio divina, picking a line of scripture as a mantra through the day or week, the examen, and contemplation in silence we were encouraged to take some time each day be it only a minute in the morning to offer the day to God and and night to thank Him.

Then we played a game where you are in pairs one blindfolded and the other at the other end of the room. The one who can see has to call directions to the partner guiding them through a maze to the end. This was naturally a very symbolic game showing how you had to try and hear your partners message (or God) calling through the noise of the other teams.

We broke for a piece of birthday cake (well all those who had not given it up for Lent!) and then finished with silent meditation.

Making Banners

We had a change of location this week, due to the parish jumble sale. So our thanks to the staff who run the hall down at St Wilfrid’s for allowing us the use of the hall.

This week we helped out the Hull evangelisation team by creating banners for their Advent project. During Advent they will be going out on to the city centre streets, prompting people to think about the real meaning of Christmas. Hopefully our banners will give a focal point and a base from which they can pass on the ‘Good News’.

Lots of careful planning went on with the help of David.

It takes great skill, to mix the paints to get just the right shade of errr brown.

Faith Youth Day - Scarborough (31/10/09)

(Sorry for the delay in getting this post out)

Most of us have been on many an enjoyable 'Faith Youth Day', So it didn't take much encouragement to get together nearly thirty of us to join Fr William and his new parishioners for Scarborough's first ever Faith Youth Day.

After refreshments on arrival (thank you for all the yummy cakes), we had our main talk "Can I be certain that God exists?"
Many people today, think that science has disproved the existence of God. This could not be further from the truth. So it was good to be reminded of the important key facts with which we can give our reasons for believing.

Later there was the opportunity for confession and it was great that so many young people wanted to go; there had to be a second sitting (for want of a better word) after Mass.

Mass was followed by lunch, then there was a choice of activities,some of the more sporty types played football or basketball and for those who preferred a gentler form of exercise there was a walk along the sea front.

Later in the afternoon we heard from Sophie Ward and Nathan Too (two of our young people who have been coming for many years now) "Why I Still Go To Mass."

The day finished with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

All Saints Party

This week we held our All Saints Party. It is the third year running we have held this event and each year it gets better.

After our opening prayers, some of our Saints came forward to give a brief description of themselves: St Paul turned up with his sword,

St Lucy - with her eyes in a dish.

St Agnes could not find a sheep so brought a woolly jumper instead.

St Frances Cabrini was a bit too fashion conscious and kept using her veil as a scarf.

It was good to see Blessed Mother Theresa along with St Francis of Assisi. And James was a very convincing St Thomas Moore.

As it is November; the month of the Holy Souls. We made a visit to our make shift cemetery, along the way we had a torch light procession and recited the litany of the saints.

After it was time for some Saint related games and a Saint quiz.

For a treat we had - blood of the martyrs Soup (Tomato) , Saint Cakes and as the Saints are our hero's we also shared a big box of Cadbury's Heroes.

Cinder Toffee

Every year Hull fair, one of Europe's largest travelling fun fairs comes to Hull and it's a major event for young people in Hull. One of the youth asked if we could mark the visit of Hull fair by making Toffee Apples at youth group but everybody knows the trouble with toffee apples is after you eat the toffee you have to eat an apple as well (some kind of parental ruse).

So... We made cinder toffee instead.

Cinder toffee is mostly made of sugar (shhhh! don't tell the parents!)

After boiling up sugar, butter and golden syrup in a pan you add vinegar and bicarbonate of soda which fizzes up and causes the bubbly goodness.

Yum!
I would like to tell you that we finished the evening with a profound moral lesson based upon the experience of making cinder toffee but we played ping pong instead!

St Therese of Lisieux

Dispite it being Hull Fair week several of the younger group turned up for youth club. The week before many of our older youth went to see the relics of St Therese Lisieux in Middlesbrough so it seemed appropriate for one of the older group to give a talk about St Therese and the trip to see the relics.

It was not only a good talk but he also answered questions about St Therese and relics really well.

Naturally there was plenty of time for games, and once they were all sugared up and tired out we sent them home.

New Beginnings

Unfortunately, we do not have very good photographs of tonight's meeting as the camera was playing up, so apologies for the blurry photographs.
We had the opportunity to meet two new people tonight: firstly our new diocesan youth worker, David. Some of us had a chance to say hello and have a little chat before we got started.

Mass was celebrated tonight in St Joseph's by our new parish priest, Fr John Wood, so we all trooped across to Church.

After Mass it was back to the hall for a bit of free time to socialise. During this time we unpacked the fabulous new table tennis table, that had arrived during the week. Only to find it was a million piece self assembly job. (Fr William makes his presence felt, even when not here!), this however did not deter us, David along with some of the older group members set to work - and after an SOS call for a screw driver and a visit from Mr A the table soon started to take shape.

Fr John popped in to see us, and was given a big WHP welcome along with a card signed from the group.

This Friday was one of those nights, when nothing goes quite according to plan, so the intended power point presentation on St Therese didn't happen due to a technical hitch. However I am sure that after our visit to Middlesbrough next Friday for the visit of the relics of St Therese, we will all be even more inspired to learn more about her.

We concluded the evening with our closing prayer, after which a small group of us went down to Our Lady of Lourdes, Hessle, to spend some time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

Farewell Fr William

It hardly seems like yesterday that we were welcoming Fr William into our parish, and yet so much has happened since he arrived that it hardly seems possible that we are saying good-bye.

Last night at youth group we all got together to give Fr William a great send off.

We started the evening with our opening prayers, followed by some games out on the lawn. We then watched a fantastic DVD, complied by Ian of all the events that we have shared with Fr, in the last five years.

Party food came next followed by the presentation to Fr William of a huge photo album crammed with memories.

Then a big surprise from Fr, a present to the youth group of a table tennis table. Thank You So Much!

Next came - (you've guessed it ) - cake!

The evening concluded with prayers and a Blessing from Fr.

We thank Fr for all that he has done for us, it was through him the youth group started, but its now time for us to let other people have a share of his talents. The best present we can give him is to continue to grow strong in the Faith and to be good faithful Catholics, to support our youth group, our parish and our new parish priest.

In this year for priests, remember to pray for all our priests.

We look forward to meeting up with Fr William at future events and perhaps youth group trips to the seaside (for those who don't know - he's going to Scarborough).

Next week we welcome Fr John to our parish.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Belated Birthday Bash

During the week, we celebrated the birthday of Our Blessed Lady. So we thought it was only fitting at this weeks youth group to have a bit of a celebration.

What do bithdays mean - CAKE!

Ella kindly baked some "blue" buns, which we had fun decorating. When I say blue buns I'm not referring to the icing, they where BLUE BUNS! As Fr William said, "Hmmm they taste quite nice if you close your eyes."

St Thomas the Apostle

Today is a very special Feast, especially for our Indian community. This is Because traditions tells us that Thomas; one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, brought the Gospel Message to India. There is not enough written documents to prove his voyage and work, but the Christians in the Malabar Coast believe that their forefathers received the Faith from St Thomas. Many ancient writers stated that Christianity was spread in the Malabar Coast in the 1st and 2nd centuries.

We celebrated this special day in the best way possible, with Holy Mass. Then Mr Saju Paul came to talk to us about St Thomas. (Many Thanks)

We completed the evening with a game of rounders with somewhat dubious rules and finally of course our Night Prayers.

At every Mass, let us join St Thomas in his declaration of Faith, My Lord and My God.

What Happened At The Chrism Mass?

Tonight Our younger group, had a presentation by some of our older members on their visit during Holy Week to Middlesbrough Cathedral for the Mass of Chrism.

The talked nicely coincided with the Feast Of the Dedication of The Cathedral. Not only did we learn about how the Bishop blesses the Holy Oils and their uses in the Sacraments, we were also reminded how here in West Hull, we are part of One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. As we are all members of Christs Body, the Church, St Mary's Cathedral is also part of that body. In other words it as much Our Church as St Joseph's, St Wilfrid's or Corpus Christi.

Most memorable part of the visit? - The Bishop breathing over the vessel of Chrism. This represents the Holy Spirit coming down. (And the Fish and Chips in Whitby afterwards)

Over the next three sessions, our older group are looking at vocations. Our greatest vocation is given to us at Baptism and that is to be a Christian.
As Christians many of us are called to a more specific vocation. Tonight we looked at marriage. James and Ella gave us a talk about married life, and about what true love means. How to tell the difference between love and infatuation.

Visit From SPES

On the Friday 3rd April 2009, we had the St Patrick's School of Evangelisation from London come to visit our youth group. There were nine members all from different counties including America, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany,Canada,France, Poland and England. Our main focus of the evening was the Easter Triduum.

First we all sat at a table listening to the reading from Maundy Thursday. Then we had our last supper signifying the Lord's breaking of the bread. We had our own bread and wine -Hot Cross Buns and grape juice. We also had our own washing of the feet. I was one of the first people to experience it.

We then moved on to Good Friday. We watched a shadow puppet 'Stations of the Cross' video. It had 15 stations which concluded in the Lord's Resurrection, after his death and burial. We then all had a chance to light a candle and say a prayer at the Crucifix.

We then went onto Easter - The Resurrection of Our Lord. It was all a bit of a surprise, the room was in darkness apart from the candles then suddenly the room was all lit up - Alleluia. Jesus had risen. We were led to a table with scripture passages tied up like scrolls, Easter eggs, candles and more. We all had pizza and it was a wonderful evening.

It was a gratifying evening and we are all privileged and thankful to have the team coming all the way from London to teach us about this special time of the year.

The Story So Far

It is hard to believe we have been running the youth club for two years now, we had our very first meeting on 27th April 2007.

So what sort of antics have we been up to since our first meeting?

Well one of the great things about being a Catholic is there is always some Feast popping up, and that is a great excuse for a party. We've had a Carnival just before the start of Lent, complete with Pancakes, unicycles, juggling and various games.

We helped Our Lady celebrate Her birthday complete with little cakes.

We dressed up for our All Saints party.

Our pantomime "Snow White" was a great success.

We've also found out more about different aspects of Our Faith.

Over this last year dedicated to St Paul, we have taken a closer look at this Saint and his writings.

We were privileged on 26th February to be involved with the special St Paul celebration, down at St Charles.
